What is Laser Liposuction (Laser Lipo)?
Dr. Caglia performs Liposuction (lypolysis) for patients in Dallas and throughout Texas. Laser liposuction rapidly dissolves fat and tightens the surrounding skin almost anywhere in the body. With this technology you can easily get rid of the famed turkey neck and actually tighten loose skin in the submental neck area. FDA cleared SlimLipo (laser-assisted lipolysis) liposuction system is a new Laser Body Sculpting procedure that offers a faster, safer and less invasive alternative to other traditional liposuction methods with fewer side effects and a shorter recovery time. Most importantly, it has a more fat selective wavelenght making this device far more effective than SmartLipo, CoolLipo or Lipotherme and undobtedly will become the Gold Standard for laser liposuction (lipolysis) and body contouring. Laser liposuction technology with SlimLipo (LifeSculpt) has revolutionized the way liposuction is done. With FDA-approval, this revolutionary and minimally invasive procedure uses a laser to offer less bleeding, swelling and bruising and a quicker recovery time than traditional lipo procedures.

Using local tumescent anesthesia, the procedure is performed with a small flexible cannula of 2mm (the size of a pencil lead) that contains a laser fiber that when moved back and forth the laser energy dissolves (liquifies) fat and tightens the surrounding skin.

How does Laser Lipolysis (Laser Liposuction) differ from Liposuction?
Laser Lipolysis adds a "skin tightening" element to a liposuction procedure. The laser heats the udern dermis and stimulates the production of collagen and breaks up dimples and fibrous tissue. In most instances this is a three-step procedure that only requires local tumescent anesthesia.
Laser Lipolysis (liposuction) uses smaller instruments with canualas up to 4mm and laser technology. It is a more efficient method of removing fat from small areas of the face, neck, arms, abdomen and areas where the skin is lax or loose. Difficult areas of back in the area of the bra roll, buffalo hump and gynecomastia in men (man boobs), jowls, sagging face and turkey neck are made easier with laser liposuction. Laser Lipolysis causes less bleeding, bruising and swelling, which results in a faster recovery. Dr. Caglia treats patients from Dallas and the DFW metroplex.
What is Tumescent Anesthesia?
Tumescent Anesthesia is the fluid that is injected into the fat to insure that your procedure is as painless as possible. It consists of Saline and Lidocaine which deadens the nerves, numbing the area, and also Epinephrine which acts as a vasoconstrictor, closing down small blood vessels. This constriction decreases blood loss, bruising, and slows the absorption of the tumescent anesthesia fluid making the anesthesia last longer. The tumescent fluid lasts in the body for approximately 14-18 hours which also reduces pain after the procedure.
Do I need any other sedation?
Patients can do very well with just oral sedation and tumescent anesthesia, however, there are patients that request conscious IV sedation and this can be discussed with your physician. These services in our office are provided by a certified anesthesia provider CRNA (certified registered nurse anesthetist). Unlike some centers that use EMT's or technicians we believe that safety is paramount to our patients and practice and only use these providers.
What is the advantage of SlimLipo over other laser liposuction (laser lipolysis) devices?
Palomar Medical recently developed SlimLipo the newest cutting edge body sculpting laser liposuction technology which has revolutionized the way liposuction is done. Dr. Caglia carefully reviewed the different devices and found the SlimLipo to be more advanced than the others after careful considering the study of the physics of the particular wavelenghts and their delivery systems. The word SLIM stands for Selective Laser Induced Melting and what is new is the dual laser wavelenght 924/975 nm which more selectively melts fat than other existing laser lipo devices. All laser liposuction machines are not equal. You need to understand the importance of the laser wavelength used to melt fat. Most laser liposuction machines on the market today use a 1064nm (SmartLipo) or 1320nm (CoolLipo) or 980nm (LipoTherme) wavelength which are water selective. Actually the best wavelength which is most absorbed by fat is 924nm (SlimLipo), which zaps the fat cell itself and liquifies it. SlimLipo melts 3 times more fat than SmartLipo and 2 times more than the CoolLipo device. SlimLipo's unique laser technology simultaneously blends 924nm & 975nm wavelenghts for preferential absorption by fat and dermal tissue heating respectively. The 975nm is the wavelength that heats water in the dermal tissue of the skin and around the fat cell resulting in skin tightening and increased production of collagen and elastic tissue and aiding in the rupture of the adipose (fat cell). This results in progressive skin tightening over a 2-6 month period, while the 924nm wavelengh melts the fat (adipose) cells. With this device the physician has the option to fire both wavelengths at the same time for greater efficiency or use them individually depending on the particular patient. With SlimLipo's unique treatment tip design, more tissue is affected resulting in a large "lipid liberation zone" surrounding the entire treatment tip.
What are the advantages of Laser Lipolysis (Laser Lipo) over other procedures?
- Quicker recovery time
- Minimal scarring, bleeding or bruising
- Smaller incisions
- Fewer side effects
- Minimal discomfort
- Local anesthesia
- Often provides skin tissue tightening
- Laser selectively dissolves fat unlike conventional liposuction which can destroy other tissue
The best candidates for Laser Liposuction (Laser Lipo):
- Have tried to eliminate bulges through diet, exercise and weight loss
- Have distinct areas of localized fat that are disproportionate to the rest of their bodies
- Have realistic expectations and are only slightly overweight BMI <30
- Understand that Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss
- Be in good health
How are the benefits of Laser Lipolysis (Laser Lipo) measured?
Cosmetically speaking, successful treatment is measured in inches not pounds. The weight removed is not as important as the improvement in your body's contour. Most importantly is your improved self-image and self acceptance and the confort in you clothing.
Is the fat removal permanent?
The fat removal is permanent. Should you gain weight, the fat will return to the areas not treated with the laser. For best results, maintain a healthy diet and exercise program.
How many treatments are required?
Laser Lipolysis can take 30 minutes on the neck and several hours on larger areas. Most patients have only one treatment. However, a touch up treatment may be required in some patients after 6 months.

How will my figure look after surgery?
Shortly after the procedure, the treated area will appear tighter, compact and smaller. The skin tightening is a gradual process and with continual improvement best results are seen after several months. You may also note areas that are firm and irregular which is normal and usually subsides in in 6-8 weeks. You will be instructed in the use of your compression garment and to begin massage to the area treated in 10-12 days after your procedure. Following your doctors orders will help eliminate post laser lipo complications.
What will my recovery be like?
After Dr. Caglia performs Laser Lipolysis, patients are back to work in only a few days and generally drive themselves to the office the next day for a check up. You will go home after the procedure and rest for a few hours, after which you may gradually increase your activity as tolerated and is encouraged. A pressure garment will be placed over the procedure area for several weeks depending on the body area treated. Refrain from strenuous exercise for several weeks which translates into no gym for 2 weeks. You will have soreness over the area done, much like going to the gym for the first time and getting sore afterwards.
